Dr. Melvin Sinowitz was born in 1942 in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. In 1950 he moved with his family to the Sheepshead Bay area and soon after became affiliated with the Young Israel of Bedford Bay. Both his parents were active members of the synagogue. His mother, Mollie was affiliated with the Sisterhood and his father, Sol was an active member of the Men’s Club. As a teenager, Mel was a Youth Director of the Young Israel and organized numerous activities for dozens of participants. The Youth Minyon, the centerpiece of the youth program, was started during his tenure. In the ensuing years, Mel continued to take his talents to camps and directed numerous dramatic events. While attending Brooklyn College, he served as President of the Brooklyn College Yavneh Chapter, an orthodox student organization. Subsequently, he served as National vice president of Yavneh, coordinating events across various college campuses as well as national conventions. Mel brought a vitality to the programs in which he participated and is remembered fondly by participants. Mel majored in Psychology and English at Brooklyn College and received his Ph.D. in Psychology from New York University. After interning at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, he joined the staff as a Clinical Psychologist. Dr. Sinowitz continued his career at Westchester Jewish Community Services in Westchester County for 25 years where he served as Chief Psychologist, Director of Training and Director of Quality Assurance and established the APA Approved Pre-Doctoral Psychology Internship program. Additionally, he maintained a private practice in Westchester. Despite his busy schedule, Dr. Melvin Sinowitz still found time to volunteer for crisis intervention serving the Orthodox community in Monsey. He served on the Board of Education of Ashar in Rockland County. Dr. Sinowitz is a past president of Congregation Bais Torah as well as Yeshiva Shaarei Torah of Rockland County. In 1995, Dr. Sinowitz decided to free up his intense professional day and devote a larger portion of his day to Judaic Studies. He continued in private practice and expanded it to Rockland County to better serve the diverse Monsey community. Currently retired, his days are dedicated to pursuing Judaic Studies and pro-bono psychotherapeutic services. Over the past several years, Mel has taken his SLR camera on his walks traversing each and every street and avenue of Manhattan. Although apprehensive of moving to the digital age, Mel currently carries a digital camera while traveling and walking the streets of Jerusalem, Brooklyn, etc. . Dr. Melvin Sinowitz and his wife, Betty are the proud parents of four married sons and grandparents to over 20 grandchildren. Retirement has allowed them to spend significant blocks of time with two of the families that have settled in Israel. Dr. Sinowitz continues to take advantage of the opportunities for pursuing his Judaic Studies as well as volunteering to help people in need in Israel.
